Hi!

I Am Veronica Kalthöner,
a designer for experimental formats and information communication.
I am particularly interested in the creative treatment of social and political issues. I am often choose temporary architectures in public spaces, installations, participative
formats or exhibitions as forms of expression. I am a regular contributor to scientific projects projects and organisations in the field of
anticrime and remembrance work,
always in close collaboration with those affected and relatives. I am a co-founder of AKAKAF working group on acoustics and anti-fascism in Hamburg.

I studied design at the Burg
Giebichenstein and at the Hochschule für bildende Künste (HFBK) Hamburg. Through mytraining as a goldsmith, various projects and internships in glassworks in Germany, Denmark and Turkey, I have practical experience in the material processing of porcelain, hot glass and wood.

I am constantly working on material based research.

Reclaiming Space

2023-2025, participative spatial design, JaeNDer Fluid and Anna Unterstab, for the Department of Equal Opportunities at the University of Bremen.

Further racist and misogynistic vandalisation has turned the sanitary facilities near the Equal Opportunities Office at the University of Bremen into a place of shock and violence. This location must be re-appropriated through a joint creative act. Together with the artists and designers Veronica Andres, Jaehwa a.k.a. Jae-Nder Fluid and Anna Unterstab, the affected employees of the University of Bremen developed a redesign of the space in order to collectively overwrite the violence-laden atmosphere. In conceptual and creative workshops, they jointly explored which interventions are necessary to redesign the toilets and corridors in such a way that visibility and agency can emerge. The redesign includes the Feminisms Wall of Fame, queer encouragement animals and a graphic illustration of the process.

AKAKAF—  Work Group Acoustics and Atifascism
(Arbeitskreis Akustik und Atifaschismus)

2022, ongoing

We are trying to come to terms with the history of the area at the Hochwasserbassin as a camp for forced labourers of the Hamburg waterworks during the Nazi era and want to make it tangible through artistic formats. Using acoustic means such as sound installations and music performances as well as videos on historical and contemporary topics, we want to encourage visitors to engage with the everyday nature of the crime during the Nazi era and at the same time raise the question of what significance the former use of the site can have for current and future uses.

Raum der Erinnerung und Solidarität
Oktober 2020, exhibition design, partial curation and coordination, with Halle gegen Rechts and the mobile victim counselling service of Miteinander e.V.

From 9-11 October 2020, Halle Gegen Rechts and the mobile victim counselling service Miteinander e.V. called on people to remember Jana Lange and Kevin Schwarze on the first anniversary of the attack and to show solidarity with those affected by the attack, the Jewish community in Halle and Kiez Döner. Videos, audio recordings and texts in which survivors and those affected had their say were exhibited at three different locations and in seven rooms not far from the sites of the attacks. There was also the opportunity to watch the broadcast of the public memorial programme and the state democracy conference taking place that day at the nearby Steintor. The Space of Remembrance and Solidarity and the Steintor were intended to be a point of contact for people who wanted to express their sympathy and solidarity and engage with the experiences and demands of the survivors and those affected and who were looking for the opportunity to meet and talk on the anniversary.

Klinker in Hamburg

2022, practical MA thesis.
supervised by Jesko Fezer and Nora Sternfeld; exhibited at Nachtspeicher23 in Hamburg

The exhibition examines a formative building element: clinker brick. It is conceived as a material-based search for traces and leads through the historical and socio-political contexts of a specific feature of Hamburg's architecture, which has a positive image in the city's self-image. Little attention is paid to the fact that during the National Socialist era an indeterminable number of bricks were produced in Neuengamme concentration camp under barbaric conditions of forced labour. It is not easy to determine which buildings were actually built during this period and with which bricks. Many building projects planned in the 1920s were only realised in the 1930s and 1940s. There are also a number of projects begun between 1933 and 1945 that were only fully realised in the post-war period. The exhibition, consisting of a spatial concept and city tours, is intended to provide an impetus for a differentiated perception and to shake up the self-image of the inhabitants.

Aula Wartenau
2021-2022, mit Anna Manlig und Lara Molenda
für Nora Sternfeld und Anja Steidinger.

Prof. Dr Nora Sternfeld's art education class at the HFBK needs a place to learn things that do not yet exist. The experimental format of the class includes classical teaching formats as well as exhibitions, lectures, symposia and discussion rounds. Following a detailed inventory, a subjective list of requirements will be drawn up in collaboration with the students to analyse the wishes of all participants. In addition to improving the acoustic and functional qualities of the space, a design is created based on movable furniture-like objects whose form and symbolism allow them to be positioned in the space and in relation to others (objects and people). The design plays with the exaggeration of hierarchical spatial structures and requires users to actively interact with the space.

Law Space Discrimination
(Recht Raum Diskriminierung)

2022, theoretical master's thesis, supervised by Jesko Fezer and Nora Sternfeld

The research deals with the spatial effects of courtrooms and their associated extensions. The focus is on subjective site inspections, historical contextualisation and perceptual psychological studies. In addition, examples are given from contemporary trials in which the designed space has contributed to a discriminatory effect.

Neustadt an der Weinstraße under National Socialism

2018-2021, exhibition design, curation, creative work for all project partsResearch project of the JGU-Mainz with PD. Dr Markus Raasch and approx. 30 students of contemporary history

Neustadt an der Weinstraße is a small town on the border with France. What today sounds like wine tasting and excursions was, from 1933, the strategic seat of the National Socialist takeover of power in the Palatinate and a Gau capital, just like Berlin or Munich. The large-scale project was organised by PD. Dr Markus Raasch from the Department of Contemporary History at the JGU-Mainz History Seminar. The sub-projects were supported by the Centre for Digital Learning, JGU's History Didactics Department and regional memorial groups, among others. The aim of the project is to research and communicate the history of the region. In addition to the exhibition, a publication, an interactive history book and an archive of contemporary witnesses have been created. As part of the project, the temporary exhibition aims to present the research results to the public in the form of posters, exhibits, installations and experimental formats.

Re-Imagine your City

The free, interdisciplinary mentoring programme invited over 120 young graduates from Germany, Ukraine, Poland and Georgia to develop projects that deal with the critical examination of our urban spaces.  People from the fields of design, architecture, urban planning, art, sociology, activism, journalism, youth work, cultural studies and other related areas worked together and attempted to outline and shape real change through activist, creative and interactive practices.
